Fantasy Romance

Some visitors may be wondering why I linked to Neil Gaiman in my list of romance writers' blogs. Well, aside from the fact that I took care to call it a list of romance and writing links to include sites of non-romance writers and on writing, I also happen to think of some of Neil Gaiman's works as fantasy romance.

The first one I read was Stardust and I loved it. I can't wait to see the movie version although I'm sure it will be a different experience from the book.

Stardust further inspired me to continue doing my fantasy romances.

When I read Neverwhere, I also felt like it was a romance. Sort of. You do know by now that I'm a hopeless romantic.

Of course, I consider Anansi Boys a romance. Charlie and Daisy. Spider and Rosie. Awww.

I even got The Sandman: Endless Nights and, yup, found a lot of romance there, too. Not the usual happy-ever-after kind, of course, but romance nonetheless. And just as moving, if not more so.

There are directions we cannot take in traditional romance novels where happy endings are expected - actually, demanded. I still love writing these stories but I also yearn to write romance beyond these limits.

And I intend to. It's in the works.

In fact, I've long been writing fantasy romance within the framework of the traditional romance novel. My readers know this.

Soon I'll be writing fantasy romance beyond that framework, too. I don't even know what to call it yet but I'm not one to worry about labels and categories. I just write what I feel like writing.

In the meantime, I'm excited to read Neil Gaiman's just-finished fictional love letter. See? I told you he writes romance.
