Sisterhood of the Travelling Interview

I read about this game from the insane writer blog, and she, in turn got it from Lost In The Words. I haven't gotten further back than that but it's a "travelling interview" that gets passed on from blog to blog.

The idea is that if you read this and you want to be part of it, you post a comment here and say "Interview Me" with your link, of course. I will send you a list of 5 personal questions that I make up myself. You answer them in your blog and offer the same to your readers.

Since I got this from a fellow writer who also got it from a writer, the questions are now somehow skewed toward the writing life. It doesn't have to be so, though. Anyone can join the game.

I also called it the "Sisterhood of the Travelling Interview" because the two previous interviewers/interviewees were female and the title is a nice take on the book and movie I loved. Still, it doesn't have to be limited to women.

So, here goes. Questions courtesy of the insane writer:

1. Where do you get your story ideas?

Everywhere. Love is everywhere. Stories from friends which I either tweak to have a happy ending or piece together or just use as a takeoff point, old and new songs, people I observe in the mall or any public place, photographs, news stories.

2. What are your thoughts on critquing?

I tend to be burned by vicious critics. It sometimes gives me temporary mental block. Us romance writers get this a lot. We also get a lot of love from our readers, though, and this more than makes up for everything. When the critique is done constructively and sincerely, especially from the readers themselves, I welcome it and learn from it.

3. What is your typical day like when you're writing?

There's no typical day for a work-at-home mom :-). Well, it's typical, I guess, to have unexpected things cropping up even if I have vowed to buckle down to writing for the whole day. I have no private office so it's open season for the whole family. There are days when I sit down in front of the computer upon waking and end up still being in my nightclothes by evening. Sometimes I eat while writing, balancing a bowl of whatever on my lap. It's a crazy life but I love it.

4. What authors inspire you?

In the field of romance, Nora Roberts. But there are so many, many more beyond romance. Neil Gaiman, of course. And how can I not include Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende and Amy Tan. I read every personal note from Isaac Asimov in his books and I treasure his "A Lifetime of Letters" compiled by his son. There are countless authors, popular and new, that I read and get inspired by. The list includes authors of inspirational and spiritual books, too.

5. What do you think your greatest accomplishment is as a writer?

In writing romance, I think it is bearing witness that true and enduring love exists and that relationships can grow and prosper to last a joyful and blessed lifetime.

There you have it.
